How Long, O Lord? Will You Forget Forever? (Advent Hymn)

I wrote this for Bethlehem Baptist Church’s 2015 advent season (see here for 2014). Our church is working its way through Book 1 of Psalms, and, by the Lord’s providence, we are in Psalms 13-16 for Advent.

This song is sung to the tune of HERZLIEBSTER JESU and has intentional resonances with “Ah Holy Jesus.”

How long, O Lord? Will you forget forever?

How long, O Lord? Will you forget forever?
How long must my soul patiently endeavor?
I trust your love and your steadfast salvation
In desperation

Israel’s salvation, descend from Mount Zion,
Vanquish our foes by sending Judah’s Lion;
We trust your mercy and your love unswerving,
Not our deserving

For us, kind Jesus, was your incarnation,
Creator bends to rescue his creation;
Come to the broken, those who had forsaken;
Come and awaken

Show us your pity; now through self denial
Stand with the guilty; join us in our trial
Heavenly Father, for our sake your own Son
bears condemnation

[CANDLE LIGHTING]

Light in our darkness, darkness overcoming,
Source of all being, now infant becoming.
Born, child from virgin; Given, Son from heaven,
Great condescension
